Mid life Crisis
"Never meet your heroes," they say. In life, everyone fights their own hidden battles. We might elevate some people to hero status based on their achievements, only to be disappointed when we see their flaws up close.
An episode of "The Crown" beautifully illustrates this. Prince Philip feels trapped by his royal duties and idolizes the Apollo astronauts. He expects them to have profound insights due to their extraordinary feat of landing on the moon. However, when he finally meets them, he finds them immature and unable to answer his deep questions. This encounter shatters his idealization, leading him to apologize to the priests he had disrespected, realizing everyone has their battles.
We often find ourselves in awe of certain individuals, imagining them to have all the answers. However, when we have a chance to meet or learn more about these heroes, we realize they are just as human and flawed as anyone else. This realization can be humbling and sometimes disappointing.
Everyone experiences periods of doubt and confusion, often referred to as mid-life crises. These are times when we question our accomplishments, failures, and the overall meaning of our lives. It’s comforting to know that even those we consider successful or heroic go through similar struggles.
Interestingly enough, in the same story, the astronauts look at Prince Philip in awe, amazed that he lives in a palace with 1,000 rooms and all the luxury. In life, so many times someone else is dreaming of the life you are living.
The key takeaway is that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and it’s crucial to recognize and accept this duality. Meeting our heroes and seeing their ordinary, flawed humanity reminds us that we, too, are capable of greatness despite our imperfections.
Ultimately, everyone is fighting their own battles, and true strength lies in confronting and overcoming these challenges. By acknowledging that everyone has their struggles, we can find the strength to navigate our own.
